Expeditions / moon hill

Moon Hill.
A view through stone.

A limestone arch above Yangshuo. Custom aircraft, a climbing team and an unfamiliar view of a remarkable landscape.

Chapter 01

The camera takes another route.

My China expedition brought custom-built aerial camera systems into the karst landscape. At Moon Hill, the arch and the countryside beneath it gave the work its sense of scale. The image places the climber within that geography, with the camera able to look back at a route that is difficult to see from the ground.

Chapter 02

A shared curiosity.

The field record also includes the people around the aircraft. Near Yangshuo, Carsten Peter and I gathered with visitors around the camera equipment—a different kind of encounter from the image of a climber on the rock. Keith Ladzinski’s photograph preserves that part of the expedition.
